Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course deals with selected issues of research design, data gathering and especially data analysis in text and discourse analytical research. Examples from studies and own research as well as practical exercises are focused on. The techniques of data analysis dealt with can bei applied to various textual material (suc as interview transcripts, media texts, documents).
In the framework of a project simulation we discuss and try out various techniques of data analysis. In small gropus we work on various aspects of a common topic to be defined by the group. Hence, various approaches and techniques can be discussed and contrasted.

- principles and quality criteria of text and discourse analytical research
- research process and plan
- issues in data gaterhing: corpus building and sampling
- Analysis 1: overview
- Analysis 2: qualitative content analysis
- Analysis 3: the praxis of discourse analysis
- Documentation and presentation of qualitative text and discourse analysis

Assessment and permitted materials

Prüfungsimmanente LV. Die Gesamtnote ergibt sich aus:
o LV-Teilnahme (Pünktlichkeit, Mitarbeit) und fristgerechte Abgabe der Arbeiten
o Übung Datenerhebung
o Übungen Datenauswertung
o Textreflexion oder Kurzpräsentation

ACHTUNG:
max. 2 PS-Einheiten Abwesenheit (Pünktlichkeit wird vorausgesetzt!)
Für den erfolgreichen Abschluss ist die Abgabe aller Übungsaufgaben zwingende Voraussetzung.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants can discuss and critically evaluate text and discourse analytical research. They know methodological principles and quality criteria of such research. They can plan their own research projects and use established techniques of data gathering and analysis.

Examination topics

Theory-Input of teacher, group exercises, readings, discussion.
