Aims, contents and method of the course

1. Course Introduction/Brainstorming: What is a city?

2. Introduction to Urban Sociology

3. The cultural dimension of cities: Urban Lifestyle, Diversity

4. The economic dimension of cities: Industrialization, Urbanization, Globalization

5. The spatial dimension of cities: Durkheim, Simmel, Chicago School

6. The spactial dimension of cities: Poverty, Segregation

7. The spactial dimension of cities: Gentrification, Social Mix

8. Sustainable cities: concepts, methods, policies, Smart City and resilience

9. The political dimension of cities: Governance, state rescaling, inclusion and exclusion, welfare systems, bottom up participation

10. European and North-American cities: contrasting views of the urban

11. Methodology: quantitative and qualitative approaches, Urban Ethnography, dissimilartiy index

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Mindestanforderung für die positive Beurteilung:
1. hinreichendes Beantworten der Klausurfragen,
2. Abfassen einer Seminararbeit gemäß den Vorgaben der Lehrveranstaltungsleitung und
3 aktive Mitarbeit im Seminarteil (inkl. Lesen der Texte).
4. Es besteht Anwesenheitspflicht, ein zweimaliges unentschuldigtes Fehlen ist gestattet.

Jede Teilleistung wird eigenständig bewertet. Die Seminararbeit fließt zu 50% in die Beurteilung der Lehrveranstaltung ein, die Klausur zu 25 % und die Mitarbeit im Seminarteil zu 25 %. Es muss jede Teilleistung erbracht werden, um insgesamt positiv beurteilt zu werden.
