Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In the course of the 18th century, art production was emancipated from its close relationships to courts and clients. At the same time Baumgarten, Burke and others invented a new "science" of aesthetics and developed tools of criticizing and reflecting works of art. Reflection of empirical forms of cultural production could be read as a signature of the very characteristics of historical moments. Hegel and later on Dilthey argued that art expresses and objectivies the "spirit" of a time. Sociology recognized the possibility of analysing society by means of art works or art movements and styles. They were understood as a highly concise expression of social processes. The interpretation of art by major social theorists gives insight into their way of reasoning. Michel Foucaults interpretation of Benthams architectural drafts as panoptical spaces, and Max Webers understanding of the piano, epitomizing the iron cage of rationalisation, are just two major examples. Last not least, scientists reflected the intrusion of art production into contexts of every day life like Alois Riegl in his book on Roman art industry. Or trivial forms of cultural production were taken seriously as expression of social processes by the tradition of anglo-saxon Cultural Studies. The lecture will not deal with the sociology or art recipients or with the social position of artists, which seem to be objects easily at hand to sociological analysis. It will deal with the social meaning of art itself. We will highlight the parallel conjunctrure of modern art and modern social science. The interpretation will focus on "social" arts like architecture, musik and performace.
