Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This one-year Research Lab (two semesters) focusses on the important question of sustainability. We will go through the issue of sustainability in manifold ways, i.e. economical, ecological and social sustainability. Eventually you will focus on one particular issue of sustainability (mobility, supply chains, waste, ...) and develop a research project.

The first semester consists of the following milestones:
• Theory: content-related discussion of the topic;
• Methods: research design, planning of the quantitative survey;
• Fieldwork: first steps for the implementation of the research project.

During the course, we will cover various steps that are part of every research process. These include: literature reviews, from theoretical concepts to analytical approaches, operationalisation of theoretical concepts, research questions´ design, primary and secondary data collection, data analysis and reporting of findings (including presentations).

The Research Lab follows a practice-based approach and assignments aim at providing an active contribution to the research project.

Assessment and permitted materials

Important Grading Information:If not explicitly noted otherwise, all requirements mentioned in the grading scheme must be met. If a required task is not fulfilled, this will be considered as a discontinuation of the course. In that case, the course will be graded as ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfill the task on the student's side (e.g. a longer illness). In such a case, the student may be de-registered from the course without grading. Whether this exception applies is decided by the lecturer.If any requirement of the course has been fulfilled by fraudulent means, be it for example by cheating at an exam, plagiarizing parts of a written assignment or by faking signatures on an attendance sheet, the student's participation in the course will be discontinued, the entire course will be graded as ‘not assessed’ and will be entered into the electronic exam record as ‘fraudulently obtained’. The plagiarism-detection service (Turnitin in Moodle) can be used in course of the grading: Details will be announced by the lecturer.In case you have received three negative assessments of a continuously assessed course and want to register for a fourth attempt, please make sure to contact the StudiesServiceUnit Sociology. Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The requirements for participating in this Research Lab are twofold. First, advanced knowledge of English (reading and writing skills) is mandatory. Second, participants are expected to have theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the use of qualitative and/or quantitative methods.

- Mandatory attendance and active participation during discussions -> 20%
- Short written assignments during the semester on producing and using data (e.g. literature review, bibliographical work, quantitative data, ...) -> 30%
- Written research report at the end of the first and second semester -> 50%

Examination topics

Sources for the written assignments and for the final research report will be predominantly (but not exclusively) empirical material produced within the project life-course and during classes.
