Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar focuses on the city as an urban space of memory for migration. The starting point is a discussion of basic texts by Maurice Halbwachs („Les cadres sociaux de la mémoire"), Pierre Nora („Les Lieux de mémoire") and other important writers for this issue, particularly in relation to migration. The importance of cities as a space of representation, but also as a combat zone of practices of collective memory, will be examined through concrete examples (USA, France, Britain, etc.) Places of crystallization and forms of remembrance of migrant groups and ethnic minorities will be studied. For these groups the visibility of their own memories is directly linked to the struggle for recognition and identity. The issue of (in)visibility and (in)visualization of marginalized and repressed memories is also discussed in relation to the museumization of migration and the associated interests and conflicts. A separate case study is designed to raise awareness of this topic and its relevance will be elaborated in the context of the current processes of change in cities.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in the literature research (annotated bibliography); full implementation of a case study (also possible in small groups), including its presentation (on the E-Learning platform as well as orally), seminar paper in written form
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Knowledge about the theoretical basic literature, critical analysis of international research and projects as well as raising awareness of the issue in the form of an exploratory case study. The seminar is offered parallel to an identical course at the University of Paris 8 (lecturer: Claire Lévy-Vroelant), whereby the participants are given the opportunity to work continuously, both in content and in comparative perspective (situation in France and Austria) as well as to share their own case studies with colleagues from Paris.
Examination topics
Lecture, reading and discussion; international literature research (creation of an annotated bibliography); excursion; conducting a case study and its documentation (Internet presentation and seminar paper). A workshop on this topic will take place at the University of Paris 8 in the first week of June, where the seminar participants have the opportunity to present their research work.
