Aims, contents and method of the course

During the semester, we will be reading the opus magnum of late Bourdieu, "Pascalian Meditations". This book can be considered as the third and last "theoretical" monograph (after "Outline of a Theory of Practice" and "The Logic of Practice") in which Bourdieu presented a synthesis of more than 40 years of his empirical and theoretical engagements with forms of social inequality in the world. "Pascalian Meditations" contains 6 chapters, which makes this book a perfect text to be read and thoroughly discussed during the 6 meetings that are being planned for the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The general aim of this reading seminar is to get a better and/or deeper understanding of the concepts, theories and epistemology of Pierre Boudieu, by which he has contributed to the development of contemporary social theory (habitus, social field, doxa, symbolic power, theory of practice, reflexivity, etc...). The primary goal of the course is, however, to enable ourselves to apply these concepts and theories in our own empirical or theoretical research.
