Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Based in pragmatist philosophy and the ideas of William Thomas (definition of the situation), Charles Cooley (looking glass self) and George Herbert Mead (generalized other), an autonomous sociological tradition has been established in the USA for which Herbert Blumer invented the label "symbolic interactionism". In the seminar we will investigate the conditions of symbolically mediated interaction by reading the works of Colley and Mead. In his lectures, published by W. Morris under the title "Mind, Self and Society", Mead did not only develop a theory of socialization and of society, but also a theory of democracy. Starting from these fundamental ideas we will discuss more recent developments as represented in the work of Howard Becker and David Matza or in the so called dramaturgical sociology in the wake of Irving Goffman.
