Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Until the 1930s, Vienna was the capital of science. Even in the 1930s, when the National Socialists had seized power in Germany, lively discussions about the foundations of modern, methodologically based sociology developed in and outside the universities. In the seminars of the jurist Kelsen and the economist von Mises, but also in the debates of the Viennese circle around Otto Neurath, ideas developed about the strictly scientific foundation of sociology, which at that time had not yet been institutionalized as a subject in Austria. Alfred Schütz, Felix Kaufmann or Erich Voegelin, all of whom were rather marginally connected with the University of Vienna, succeeded in continuing these ideas in the debate with Max Weber and Georg Simmel against the backdrop of modern phenomenology and the modernization process in Austria, which was now beginning to take off violently. In dealing with the consequences of modernization, Paul Lazarsfeld and his colleagues (Marie Jahoda, Hans Zeisel) were able to translate theoretical conceptual work into empirical research, thus becoming pioneers of empirical social research.
