Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials

- Regular attendance and participation
- Reading of selected texts in preparation for the seminar,
- Presentation (structure will be provided during semianr)
- 2 Essays during term (max 3 pages)Knowledge of English (reading and writing skills) is mandatory, as the working languages of the seminar are German and English. This implies that the input provided (teaching, reading, assignments) is partly in English.

1. an introduction to basic principles of political sociology by analyzing critically classical texts by de Tocqueville, Weber and Mosca and Michels
2. analyse conditions for the development of welfare states by adopting a comparative perspective on different policy fields (e.g. labour market, gender, education and environment).
We will also address methodologcal issues on how to compare institutions and welfare states.
