Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course provides an application-oriented overview of quantitative research methods. It serves as a “crash course” to review key content from undergraduate sociology courses (Bachelor) on quantitative methods. The goal is to establish a solid foundation at the start of the master’s program to facilitate an in-depth engagement with advanced quantitative methods. The methods covered will be applied practically using the Stata statistical software, and beginners to Stata are welcome. The course is particularly suited for students who did not major in sociology during their undergraduate studies but is also recommended for those who wish to refresh their knowledge of quantitative methods.

The course covers the following topics:
• Research process: Sampling, questionnaire design
• Data analysis: (a) univariate: frequency tables, measures of central tendency and dispersion; (b) bivariate: cross-tabulations, measures of association; (c) multivariate: linear and logistic regression analysis
• Graphical presentation of results
