Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This undergraduate lecture will address the interaction of new media, technology and society. It will provide an historical overview of various media technologies & their creators in their social contexts as well link successive media eras along a genealogical continuum. The lecture will conclude with a critical evaluation of new media technologies & their creators like the Internet and Mobile Telephony and their role in shaping individual identity, group solidarity and local and global culture. The course will be based on weekly lectures, readings, and documentary & fiction films that feature debates about how media shapes and is shaped by social change. A novel theory named "Systems of Accountability" will also be presented that strategically places new media at the center of contemporary global environmental and social debates.
