Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course seminar will introduce the methods and theories of Science and Technology Studies (STS) and related fields to explore the relationship of experts and politics in the domain of environment. For this purpose, the course combines theoretical ideas from STS with empirical examples ranging from nuclear power, air pollution, climate change, biodiversity to energy transformations. Environmental issues offer exemplary cases to study the negotiated and contested nature of expertise in society and changes and transformations in the relationship between science and society. The course attempts to reconstruct the development of key STS concepts in response to the environmental discourses in Europe and the US. Beginning with a short historical overview and standard models, the course discusses alternate frameworks that see 'science' and 'policy' not as cognitively and culturally distinct spheres but as engaged in a constant process of interaction and mutual stabilization. The course is also designed to reflect on our own role as experts in environmental and sustainability discourses.
