Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course offers an introduction into and an overview of the agents in the field of labor relations, the levels of interaction, and their societal relevance. The relations and mutual dependencies between organized labor and capital are discussed in Austria and from an international comparative perspective against the backdrop of theoretical concepts. Starting from the logic and problem of association, labor relations are studied at the societal, enterprise and political level. Finally, attempts at a European coordination of bargaining systems and collective bargaining as well as the European Social Dialogue are explored. The participants study the mandatory readings of each course unit. For every unit a number of participants prepare a short statement about the text from which the discussion starts. Then, other participants present their work on a case study. These case studies are then turned into a seminar paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course is “prüfungsimmanent”, which means that the students will be assessed throughout the entirety of the taught lessons. Each participant has to prepare four statements about the readings spread over the course, which are uploaded on Moodle (20%). Further participants present a case study, the slides of which are uploaded on Moodle (40%). Finally, the presentations is turned into a seminar paper (2000-2500 words) and uploaded on Moodle until 30 August 2024 (40%). All materials uploaded on Moodle undergo a plagiarism check by means of Turnitin. The use of artificial intelligence (e.g. Chat GPT) is not permitted in any way.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement for a positive grade is the presence in the course meetings (a maximum of two meetings may be missed), active participation in the course units, the submission of statements in time, the presentations of the case study and the submission of the seminar paper according to the requirements of the course instructor.

Examination topics

There will be no separate exam.
