Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course offers an overview of sociological approaches and present developments in the field of critical masculinity studies. The central focus lies on intersectional approaches which are currently discussed in Women's and Gender Studies. This research focus renders an analysis of masculinities as structured by social hierarchies (such as: class, race/ethnicity or sexuality) possible. The intersectional approach thus constitutes a frame for such relevant feminist questions as interactions between socio-economic resources and constructs of masculinities or the relevance of racism and discrimination for constructs and representations of "othered" masculinity.

After passing this course, students should be able to situate and evaluate research as well as point to omissions and develop novel research questions.
