Aims, contents and method of the course
'Sustainability' comes to be considered the global challenge of the 21st century - no less than nature itself and humankind seem to be at stake. Considerable scientific and political work is invested to reach consent for example on anthropogenic climate change as unquestioned 'global fact' and establish sustainable development as universal solution. The seminar raises the question how 'sustainability' is co-enacted on different (spatial and temporal) scales and by different actors as 'matter of fact' and 'fact that matters'. We will ask how international agreements are linked with local initiatives, and future generations with our present practices; and try to get to grips with how facts and values, place and belief, knowledge and identity are interconnected. To do so, enactments of 'sustainability' in different spaces and places, times, communities and institutions will be followed. Linking conceptual approaches to empirical reflections of various documents and case studies the seminar strongly builds on discussion and the active participation of the students. To earn a grade, students need to be present during the lessons, read the literature, participate in discussions and group work, analyse a case study, present it in the seminar and reflect on it in written contributions during the semester.
