Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar places the institutions of research within the larger debates over progress, equity and sustainability. The central questions of the seminar ask (1) what are the historical roots of asymmetrical science capacity and output between developed and less developed nations? (2) what present-day local and global social and technological mechanisms propagate this pattern? and (3) what are the consequences of continued asymmetry in global science? In addition, the specific interplay between new ICTs, science and development will be addressed. Throughout the seminar students will be challenged to evaluate the normative discourse of symmetry and its policies, and perhaps propose their own discourses and policies to address the global science symmetry issue.
