Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contrary to the dominant approach locating sociology in the history of ideas, the lecture addresses the urban anchoring and situating of the discipline. Applying the examples of Chicago, London, Paris, Berlin and Vienna, the lecture follows the argument that urban contexts are constitutive for specific problem definitions, methodological approaches and research practices. Relevant international literature on the importance of urban contexts and places for sociology, its various approaches and research methods, are presented and discussed. The case studies are completed by excursions to selected sociological places in Vienna (and surrounding area).
