Aims, contents and method of the course

Hackerspaces, hackathons, fablabs, barcamps, do-it-yourself labs, ... a wide array of new forms and sites of innovation have emerged over the past few years. In this course, we will explore these alternative spaces in which science and technology are tinkered with. We will, first of all, look at the politics of such alternative spaces. How do they decentralize, redistribute and open up innovation? How do they try to empower citizens and render science and technology more accessible and democratic? Second, we will closely look at the materials and equipment that are built and used in these spaces. Be it alternative 3D printers, PCR machines or microscopes: hackers use, reuse, and transform various kinds of material in creative ways. This course aims at providing students with empirical, theoretical and methodological knowledge for understanding the social aspects of open source science and technology. Our seminar will be interactive and multimedia: we will discuss academic texts, comment on student presentations, visit a hackerspace, watch documentaries, discuss with hackers, and examine the objects they produce.

Assessment and permitted materials

Course Assessment
To pass the seminar, students are expected to complete the following tasks:
- Preparation of each session: read the required texts.
- Active participation in the discussion of all sessions.
- Oral presentation of 15-20 minutes accompanied by a short handout (1-2 pages) for the ‘things hacked’ session.
- Essay (around 10 pages; excluding the bibliography; no need for a cover page) to be handed in before the 17th of January 2020 via e-mail to morgan.meyer@mines-paristech.fr and on Moodle. Some suggestions for essays topics will be provided, but students are also encouraged to propose their own themes, which will be discussed with - and approved by - the lecturer.

This course uses the plagiarism-detection service Turnitin for larger assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading Scheme

Preparation and active participation in the discussion of all sessions:
20 %, assessed individually, feedback on request;
Oral presentation & handout: 30 %, assessed individually or as a group, feedback in class;
Final essay: 50 %, assessed individually, feedback on request;

Minimum requirements
A minimum of 50 points is necessary to successfully complete the course. Failure to meet the attendance regulations, to deliver course assignments on time or to adhere to standards of academic work may result in a deduction of points.

86-75 points Good (2)
74-63 points Satisfactory (3)
62-50 points Sufficient (4)
49-0 points Unsatisfactory (5) (fail)

To successfully complete the course, a weighted average of at least 4,5 is required. Failure to meet the attendance regulations, to deliver course assignments on time or to adhere to standards of academic
work may also be considered in the course assessment.

Attendance
Presence and participation is compulsory. Absences of four hours at maximum are tolerated, provided that the lecturer is informed about the absence. Absences of up to eight hours in total may be compensated by either a deduction of grading points or/and extra work agreed with the lecturer. Whether compensation is possible is decided by the lecturer.
Absences of more than eight hours in total cannot be compensated. In this case, or if the lecturer does not allow a student to compensate absences of more than four hours, the course cannot be completed and is graded as a ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfil the attendance requirements on the student’s side (e.g. a longer illness). In such a case, the student may be de-registered from the course without grading. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this in a timely manner, and to provide relevant evidence to their claims if necessary. Whether this exception applies is decided by the lecturer.

Important Grading Information
If not explicitly noted otherwise, all requirements mentioned in the grading scheme and the attendance regulations must be met. If a required task is not fulfilled, e.g. a required assignment is not handed in or if the student does not meet the attendance requirements, this will be considered as a discontinuation of the course. In that case, the course will be graded as ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfill the task on the student's side (e.g. a longer illness). In such a case, the student may be de-registered from the course without grading. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this in a timely manner, and to provide relevant evidence to their claims if necessary. Whether this exception applies is decided by the lecturer.
If any requirement of the course has been fulfilled by fraudulent means, be it for example by cheating at an exam, plagiarizing parts of a written assignment or by faking signatures on an attendance sheet, the student's participation in the course will be discontinued, the entire course will be graded as ‘not assessed’ and will be entered into the electronic exam record as ‘fraudulently obtained’. Self-plagiarism, particularly re-using own work handed in for other courses, will be treated likewise.
