Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents, aims and methods of course:
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of multimodal anthropology and its application in the study of smart cities. Through a combination of theoretical discussions, case studies, and fieldwork, students will explore how various modes and media can be employed to analyze the interactions between technology, society, and urban environments. The course seeks to:
Equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to conduct multimodal anthropological research in urban settings.
Foster critical thinking on the role of technology in shaping urban life, with a focus on smart cities.
Encourage students to engage with communities and stakeholders to understand the social and cultural implications of smart technologies.
Develop students' ability to analyze and evaluate smart city initiatives and technologies through a multimodal anthropological lens.

Methods:
Lectures and Discussions: Theoretical concepts will be introduced through lectures, followed by discussions to encourage critical thinking.
Readings: Students will be assigned readings from key texts to deepen their understanding of the topics.
Case Studies: Real-world examples will be analyzed to apply theoretical concepts in practical scenarios.
Fieldwork: Students will engage in fieldwork exercises to conduct multimodal anthropological research in urban settings.
Guest Lectures and Workshops: Experts in the field will be invited to share insights and experiences.
Presentations and Group Work: Students will work in groups to present their findings and analyses.
Reflective Writing: Students will engage in reflective writing to critically analyze their learning experiences.
This course is designed for MA students in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) and is suitable for those interested in anthropology, urban studies, technology, and social sciences. Through an interdisciplinary approach, students will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to critically analyze and engage with smart cities through a multimodal anthropological lens.

Assessment and permitted materials

To pass the seminar students are supposed to actively participate in all the activities, in class discussions and deliver the assignments.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A minimum of 50 points is necessary to successfully complete the course. Failure to meet the attendance regulations, to deliver course assignments on time or to adhere to standards of academic work may result in a deduction of points.
