Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course examines theories and practices of gender and sexuality as they pertain to people in diverse cultural contexts, both contemporary and historical. A key aim of the course is to trouble common sense notions of gender and sexual behaviour which often assume essential and natural traits common to all humanity: the binary nature of sex/gender; the naturalness of heterosexuality; the universal pairing of gendered and sexual expression with reproduction.

The course has three overarching concerns:

1) An overview of the anthropology of gender and sexuality;
2) The treatment of special topics, such as feminist ethnography and theories, queer anthropological approaches, and intersectional analysis that addresses gender/sexuality and other categories of difference;
3) The discussion of contemporary aspects of sexual and gender diversity politics at the global level, with particular attention to transnationalism.

Lecture with student participation in discussion.

The course is supported by an accompanying tutorial.
Tutor: Johanna Hauenschild.
