Aims, contents and method of the course

Objectives:
The lecture will give an overview of the scientific history of anthropological migration research and furthermore familiarise students with the central theories and terminology as well as areas of application of anthropological migration research. In a practice-oriented focus, current anthropological research, the concepts applied and relevant developments in Austria will be conveyed.

Course contents
This introductory lecture offers a basic insight into the development and main topics of anthropological migration research. The students are familiarised with essential research fields of the topic by tracing the precursors and beginnings of migration research and by conveying basic terminology. Apart from the explanation and discussion of theoretical discourses, the lecture also traces and critically examines the legal-political discourses and structures of the Austrian migration regime (in the EU context). Finally, an important part of the lecture is to familiarise students with the practice of migration research, which is ensured by presenting case studies and guest lectures.

Methods
The lectures are held in media-supported lectures by the course leaders (and two guest speakers).
The course leaders provide the documents (PowerPoint slides) and further literature on a Moodle platform. In addition, the online forums of the platform can be used for exchange and communication.

Assessment and permitted materials

Depending on the legal situation, the examinations are conducted in presence or by digital written examinations with an examination sheet for download (100% of the performance check).

In both cases, no aids - such as documents from the course - may be used during the examination.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At least 50% of the written examination must be passed.
