Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This seminar focuses on fieldwork and ethnographic methods. Different qualitative methods are introduced and discussed in class and acquired through practical exercises outside the classroom. The focus lies on participant observation, different interview methods, qualitative analysis and writing.
Assessment and permitted materials
The course counts for 10 ECTS, which equals a workload of 250 working hours/student. These working hours are approximately divided as follows:50 hours participation in class
100 hours in the field and preparing field notes
100 hours individual work and team work (reading, writing, preparing presentations etc.)Individual assessment counts for 60% of the final grade and includes:
regular attendance of seminar
active reading of the compulsory literature and active discussion in the class
accomplishing selected parts of the empirical investigation for the group project (including participant observation, interviews, documentations plus a transcription of an interview (at least 1 hour!)
small assignments are accomplished at home and discussed in class (e.g. sample of field notes, transcribed and coded interview)
writing an 'ethnography' of about 3,000-4,000 wordsGroup assessment counts for 40% of the final grade and includes:
research proposal (700-1,000 words)
small group presentations and final group presentation
submission of all data collected during the research process (including field notes, analytical notes, interview recordings, interview reports, transcriptions, photos and other relevant documents).
group research report of 2,000-3,000 words documenting the research process, stating the research question and main findings, list of literature consulted, discussion of the limits of the research

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Overview of key methods for ethnographic research and first practical experiences with collecting, documenting and interpreting data. Ethical questions (including the role of the researcher in the field) take central part in the discussion of the different methods.
Examination topics
Discussion in class will be based on selected readings and on the input provided by the lecturer. For the practical exercises, students will work in small groups, carrying out a small research project. Every team presents its findings to the other seminar participants and writes a research report based on preliminary findings.

A reading list including compulsory and further reading will be distributed in the first seminar session and the literature will be uploaded on Moodle.
