Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Cultural and social anthropology or ethnology cannot be pursued without a deeper understanding of historical contexts. To a certain extent, they are even historical sciences, because dealing with historical sources has always been of great importance; and this circumstance is also important for the ethnological interpretation of recent developments. Especially in ethnohistory - which has a long tradition on Viennese soil and from where essential impulses for this method and theory were developed - this manifests itself particularly clearly. In the lecture, the history of ethnology, but especially the importance of history in and for ethnology, will be discussed and the differences between ethnohistory and historical anthropology will become transparent. Regarding the history of the subject itself, important developmental steps will be clarified on the basis of individual ethnologists and their theories. The lecture offers an overview and an introduction to an in-depth study of the history of our discipline as well as the significance of historical theories and survey and interpretation practices for cultural and social anthropology.
Assessment and permitted materials
Beginning at the end of the course, there will be several one-hour written examination sessions. The one-hour (45-minute) written exam will have four questions, all four of which must be answered. Two of these are more general, overarching questions, and two are detail questions. Material is provided on the moodle platform for this course as reading and study material. In the lecture it will be clearly explained what of this material is reading material and possibly further material, and what must be read for the written exam.First exam date scheduled for January 30, 2024, 11:30-12:30 in HS II in NIG (ground floor).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Positive completion of the one-hour written examination is a prerequisite for positive completion of this course. 16 points will be awarded for the four questions to be answered, i.e. four points per question. All questions must be answered. A minimum of 8 points must be obtained. 15-16 points = Sehr gut (1); 13-14 points = gut (2); 11-12 points = befriedigend (3); 9-10 points = genügend (4); 8 or fewer points = nicht genügend (5).
