Aims, contents and method of the course

In the context of this course, we want to deepen and expand our current understanding of gender studies and their theories by implementing them in one's own analysis of different sources. By drawing on cultural texts and societal phenomenons we want to look at theories, models and methods of cultural and gender studies to reassess their applicability in each of these cases. For this purpose, we will not just discuss canonized texts and contextualize them in socio-cultural and historical periods of their writing, but we want to judge if the theories in question can be employed for the chosen case studies or if they have to be adapted in one way or another. Can we just use them or do with have to change and extend them in a critical reflective way? Are there any historical or sociocultural limitations when dealing with these theories and methods?
In the context of seven units, we will discuss and reflect the impact as well as importance of theories and models of the feminist film theory (Laura Mulvey), queer reading (Andreas Kraß), porn studies (Linda Williams), orientalism (Edward Said), men's studies (Richard Dyer), disability studies (Rosemarie Garland-Thomson), and post-feminism (Angela McRobbie). Without any reverence for the "famous names", we will approach these central authors of gender as well as cultural studies to dive deeper into essential fields of gender studies and to enhance one's own skills in employing theories and models in a critical way.
After an introduction to the course, each unit will focus on one central text that we will discuss in depth in two ways: Firstly, we will not just (historically) contextualize and critically discuss its models, methods, and theories, but also exemplify them by looking at ways how we can utilize them in actual analysis (of films, texts, photographies, advertisement, games, letters etc.). In the second part of these units, students have the possibility to present preliminary analysis of cultural sources of their own choosing.

The main goals of this course are 1.) to deepen the knowledge of the theories and the research fields of gender studies and 2.) to sharpen one's critical and reflective approach to theories, models, and methods, especially in the context of one's own analysis. Aside from that, secondary objectives are 3.) the critical and reflective reading of scientific literature, 4.) improving one's competency with different types of scholarly texts, and 5.) sharpening one's academic communication skills in written (essay, assignments) and oral form (discussions, presentations).

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading is based on five differently weighted components:
three written tasks, 1.) excerpting two discussed texts (20% of the final grade), 2.) test analysis / trial chapter as preparation for the final paper (20 % of the final grade), 3.) the final paper (40 % of the final grade),

and up to two oral tasks, 4.) possibly a presentation or moderation (not obligatory), and finally 5.) attendance and active participation (20 % of the final grade).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For details regarding the grading, please take a look at the information you find in section "Art der Leistungskontrolle". Furthermore, because attendance is obligatory, you can miss a maximum of two (2) classes.
