Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Umbrella topic: Resource politics and global inequality

The course will start with a series of exercises on resource politics. For instance, participants will be asked to elaborate a list of resource dependent countries, map the production networks of selected raw materials, find figures on the dominance of companies and states in the production of selected raw materials or compare the outcomes of investor-state dispute settlement (s. ICSID).
In these introductory meetings, I will also give you an overview of the history of resource politics in EU-Africa relations and present several case studies as well as an ongoing research project (Arbitrex).
At the latest in May, we will start to develop research designs based on specific research questions. The endresult of this course in June should be such a research design. It will be possible to work in groups.

Basic knowledge of political economy is recommended (e.g.: What is a bilateral investment treaty? What is direct investment?). The exercises will focus on quantitative methods (mostly data bases and excel), but research designs may include qualitative approaches.

The second part of this FOSE should entirely focus on empirical research. In exceptional cases, it will also be possible to focus on topics that have nothing to do with the overall theme of the seminar.

Assessment and permitted materials

Research design, active participation, excercises.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1. Attendance and active participation: 20% of the grade. Students who have more than two unexcused absences cannot continue with FOSE II. A lack of participation (despite "virtual attendance") may also result in expulsion from the course.
2. Exercises: 40% of final grade. Students who do not hand in at least 4 exercises 24h before the respective unit cannot continue with FOSE II.
3. Research design (submission preferably in June, but no later than 31 July): 3-5 pages (minimum 1000 words), 40% of the grade. Suggested structure: introduction - research question(s) - (literature review) - operationalization/method – possible outcomes.
