Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Recent decades have seen the rise of economics as the dominant social science and of certain ways of thinking about 'the economy' as a system with its own logic. Political and social goals are defined and evaluated in terms of their effect on 'the economy' and economic decision-making is relegated perceived as the realm of a small group of economic technocrats.

Assessment and permitted materials

This course will introduce students to the study of economic knowledge from a sociological perspective. Readings will depart from economic sociology and the sociology of knowledge and discuss the role of economics as an academic discipline, heterodox ways of economic thought, as well as the role of knowledge for economic decision-making.

Students are asked to actively participate in discussions, present one of the texts and write a brief assignment after the end of the class.
The class will take place in the form of a Blockkurs.
