Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As a prerequisite for participation in this course, we assume a basic knowledge of developmental studies. This knowledge can be acquired in the AG (EC-EF2). This course should be completed before taking a GM2 course.

The course will be held entirely face-to-face (compulsory attendance!) and will be divided into four sections:
1) Introduction (overview, forms, actors and institutions of development policy)
2) History (from the 1950s to today)
3) Cross-cutting issues (e.g. intersectionality, sustainability, post-development,...)
4) Development in practise

Method: Discussion of weekly core texts (flipped classroom); co-moderation of students.

Assessment and permitted materials

Weekly attendance, weekly homework assignments, co-moderation (or presentations) by students, active participation.
The use of AI to improve grammar and style as well as for exploratory purposes is permitted and encouraged. However, if students are suspected of using AI to write papers on texts that they have not read themselves, unannounced examinations may be held on these texts. This can ultimately lead to exclusion from the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Submission of at least 11 weekly assignments, one presentation (or comoderation), active participation (two sessions can be missed without excuse). The final grade is the average of these 12 partial marks (11+1). More submissions lead to the elimination of the worst partial marks (e.g., 8*1+4*2+2*5=1,3).

Examination topics

However, unannounced oral examinations may be held in the event of uncertainties regarding written performance (e.g. in connection with the misuse of AI; see above).
