Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar aims at discussing theories relating to the state, nation-nationalism, and economics in the scope of present (neoliberal) crises.
If we look back at the beginning of globalization studies in anthropology, and other social sciences, there was a an expression of “uncertainty” which was positively linked to the possibility of new social formations – e.g. Appadurai’s concept of “global cultural economy” and imagination as a characteristic of social life. Today, uncertainty is rather connected to disquiet and fear …
Students attending the seminar will be encouraged to consider present conflicts in the context of media, and to analyse them with present theories of the fields mentioned above.
Active participation is a sine qua non.

Assessment and permitted materials

The marking will be a combination of active participation, of the short presentation and the long paper – which will have to be ready before the final sessions. Feedback will be given to the presentation and paper in the very final session. Presence in the final sessions (presentations and feedback) is a must.
