Evaluations of development cooperation projects are now an important part of development cooperation work. In most cases, quantitative approaches are used, which are carried out by external evaluation companies. This seminar examines the extent to which this practice can be supplemented by alternative evaluation approaches. The focus will be on the assumption that, especially in development cooperation, evaluations can provide an appropriate framework for the development of transcultural learning spaces. Accordingly, this seminar will take a closer look at the notions of evaluation, transculturality and participation. Building on this, the concepts behind these terms will be put in relation to each other and it will be explored whether and how they can work together in practice.Aims:
The aim of this seminar is to reflect on and learn about the importance of evaluation, participation and transculturality in development cooperation, to recognize and acknowledge inequalities/inequities and to develop sensitivity for situations and contexts in which evaluation processes improve or worsen unequal conditions for those involved. Methods:
Students deal theoretically and practically with the central notions and concepts of the course. They develop evaluation designs for current development cooperation projects. The evaluation designs are presented and reflected upon in the course. The methodological framework of the course is provided by the concept of transformative research and education as well as socio-cultural transformation research. In this context, work is carried out in the sense of research-based learning.
