Guided Reading: Ursula Le Guin

It may be that Ursula Le Guin's books such as ‘Earthsea’ or ‘Planet of the Have-Nots’ are not really well known. They are probably among the best queer fantasy or science fiction works. Ursula K. Le Guin's literary projects were impressive and bold. She invented archipelagos of fantasy with hundreds of islands populated by wizards and dragons, worlds with thriving and hostile cultures. Unfortunately, according to Le Guin, she only realised late on that she had missed something important - her writing reproduced male fantasies. In Earthsea and her other stories, only men are the initiated magicians, women are at best good as witches for love or jealousy spells and are usually found behind the cooker (Zähringer 2019). This was the starting point of her search for a form of story - with which she also ended Erdsee - that not only allowed for duplicates of male heroes in female bodies or female characters in male spaces.
In the GR course, we will follow this trail and others - using interviews, essays and texts - in joint readings and discussions.
