Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture series, we will focus on 'development', development research and the dominant development paradigms. Both, current and historical approaches and conceptions of development will be presented and discussed. In the first part the concept of 'development' and what development studies and transdisciplinarity stands for will be tackled. The second part will focus on modernization and dependency theories as well as neoliberalism and post-development approaches, while the third part will deal with questions of alternative approaches, development & gender as well as the relationship between science and (development) policy. The aim is on the one hand to give an overview of the discipline of development studies and on the other hand to present theoretical approaches and perspectives that have shaped and still shape development research, ideas of "development" and development policy practice (these will be deepened in the course of the Master's program!). A critical examination of the different approaches is also a central goal of the lecture. The lecture can only introduce the topics and their interrelationships, the deepening will take place in course of the Master program.

Please note: the lecture will be held in German and English. I.e. some units will be in English others in German

Assessment and permitted materials

The multiple choice exam (in English or German) takes place at the end of the semester and consists of 20 questions. For each question there are four possible answers of which up to 3 can be correct. You must answer at least 50% correctly to complete the exam and thus the lecture positively.

Examination topics

Exam material is the required literature uploaded on Moodle as well as the presentations, which will also be available on Moodle (the latter will be uploaded after each lecture).

The best exam preparation is regular attendance as well as preparation and follow-up of the literature. There will be enough time to discuss or answer questions about the texts.
