Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture we will deal with the basics of development research and with the main development paradigms. Both current and historical development theories and approaches will be presented and discussed. After an introduction, we will deal with modernization and dependency theories as well as with the history of neoclassical and feminist approaches. In a third part, several current approaches will be presented (post-colonialism, post-development, capabilities approach, ...). In the last session, a discussion with former students of the master’s program will take place.

The lecture should provide a first glimpse into the field of development research by focusing on the fundamental theoretical approaches that still characterize our ideas of ‘development’ and practices of “development” today. The alumni discussion in the last session should enable reflections on possible practical “applications” of this master’s program. The lecture only offers an introduction to fundamental approaches of development research. These topics will be discussed in more detail in the following courses.

The lecture will be held in German and English.

Assessment and permitted materials

Single-choice exam on site at the end of the semester. Only dictionaries are permitted, and only for students whose native language is neither German nor English. There will be a total of four examination dates.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The single-choice exam (English or German) takes place at the end of the semester and consists of 20 questions. You must answer at least 50% of the questions correctly in order to pass the exam.

Examination topics

The examination will be based on the oral presentations (no recordings) and the slides of the presentations. For most sessions there will also be compulsory literature. Both will be available on Moodle in the respective sections for every session (the slides will be uploaded after each lecture).
The best preparation for the exam is regular attendance and preparatory reading of the compulsory texts. Questions on the lectures as well as on the basic texts can be discussed in the plenum after the lectures.

Reading list

Required reading on Moodle as well as additional texts, which will also be uploaded.
