Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture we will deal with the basics of development research and with the main development paradigms. Both current and historical development theories and approaches will be presented and discussed. After an introduction, we will deal with modernization and dependency theories as well as neoclassical and feminist approaches. In a third part, current approaches to development research in Vienna will be presented. In the last session, a discussion with former students of the master’s program will take place.

The lecture should provide a first glimpse into the field of development research by focusing on the fundamental theoretical approaches that still characterize our ideas of ‘development’ and practices of “development” today. The alumni discussion in the last session should enable reflections on possible practical “applications” of this master’s program. The lecture only offers an introduction to fundamental approaches of development research. These topics will be discussed in more detail in the following courses.

The lecture will be held in German and English. The examinations will be held in German only. If you have any questions regarding examination procedures, etc., please do not hesitate to contact us. However, we kindly ask you to read the following information carefully beforehand. The examination procedures cannot be changed during the semester.

Assessment and permitted materials

Single-choice exams in German on site at the end of the semester. During the exams, no supplementary materials are permitted, with the exception of dictionaries for students whose native language is not German. There will be a total of four examination dates.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to take the exam in another language. In recent semesters, it has turned out that the needs are too diverse and the exam papers would become too long as a result. It is neither possible to change the general exam language for individual exam dates, as the same conditions must be guaranteed in all four exams. However, it is possible (and recommended!) to ask comprehension questions throughout the 50-minute examinations, particularly with regard to language ambiguities. In addition, non-native speakers may be granted more time (+10 minutes) for the examination upon prior request.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The single-choice examination consists of 20 questions, each with four possible answers, only one of which is correct. To pass, at least 50% of the questions must be answered correctly.

Examination topics

The exam is based on the lecture content and presentation slides. Most units will also have mandatory reading. The best way to prepare for the exam is to attend regularly and read the mandatory texts before each unit. After the presentations, there will be sufficient time for questions about the content of the lectures and mandatory reading.
