Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents: This seminar, which is planned for two semesters, deals with the topic of identity and belonging. It familiarizes participants with diverse theories, methods and analytical tools applied in the study of identity and belonging, from symbolic interactionism to intersectionality analysis. It also focuses on the fundamentals of conceptualizing and designing qualitative research to provide participants the necessary know-how for designing their own research projects on the topic of identity and belonging.
In the guidelines/recommendations of research seminars for teachers and students, it is stated that the goal of the research seminar is to get to know all phases of the research process in the sense of a learning process. The first of the following research phases should be ideally covered in the first semester of this seminar and the other three in the second semester:
• Research design: formulating the central research question, reviewing the state of research, combining the research question with theoretical approaches and methods and selecting a research design.
• Research process: in-depth literature research, empirical research, evaluation and analysis of the data in the context of different methodological approaches. Research work can of course also be theoretical.
• Presentation of the results and writing of a research paper or a research report.

Aims: The first aim of this seminar is providing the participants the basic knowledge on the processes of social construction of identities, collective production of meaning, and othering. It also introduces the theoretical foundations, methods and analytical tools applied in the study of identity and belonging.
Second, the seminar aims to refresh what the participants have already learned in their past qualitative methodology courses about defining a research problem and formulating good research questions, reviewing the literature, and selecting a research design.
Third aim is supporting participants to develop their own research project on the topic of identity and belonging.
