Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course explores the rise and the location of cultural industries particularly in urban economies. The course will focus on the interplay of entrepreneurial cities, cultural economies, and an array of institutions that are entangled with the development of cultural industries especially in the context of neoliberalization. There will be a particular focus on the role of cultural industries and culture-led urban development in deindustrialized cities, as well as on economies and institutions built around heritage protection and tourism. On the basis of case studies from different parts of the world, the opportunities cultural economies provide for different segments of the population and their complex empowerment dynamics will put under scrutiny. This course will also look at the activities and policies of institutions involved in cultural economies (like UNESCO, Eurimages, Europen Council).
