Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Postcolonial studies, emerging from Literature studies, developed into an interdisciplinary research programme that substantially influenced Anthropology from the 1990ies onwards. This class will critically examine central texts and case studies. First we focus on the anti-colonial roots of the postcolonial (e.g. Frantz Fanon) as well as the "classics" (e.g. Edward Said) and diverse recent approaches. Another focus is on the critics, who question the axioms of postcolonial theory (e.g. Arif Dirlik).
Assessment and permitted materials
Students will have three options to receive a grade. One is an active participation, e.g. giving short inputs about theory or ethnographic vignettes. This should be accompanied with a short paper of 10 pages. Another form is writing a paper of 20 pages at the end of the semester. The paper should have a thematic focus that engages with the topics presented in class. Finally, an oral examination is also feasible.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The lecture enables participants to gain an introductory understanding of Postcolonial Studies as well broaden their theoretical and methodological knowledge of Social and Cultural Anthropology.
