Die Zuhörer sollen ein Verständnis für die Macht der Bilder bekommen. Die Möglichkeiten und die Tragweite des Einsatzes von Bildern für propagandistische, touristische und missionarische Ziele wird anhand zahlreicher Beispiele anschaulich dargestellt.

Ein so ein Beispiel ist das Südseeklischee, welches seit seiner Entstehung bis heute nachwirkt und entsprechend ausgebeutet wird. Während in der LV "Populärkunst zu Ozeanien" vor allem auch theoretische Erörterungen stattfinden, werden in dieser Vorlesung vor allem anhand von Beispielen verschiedene Wege gezeigt, mit denen ganz gezielt bestimmte Sichtweisen - z.B. (kolonial)politische, missionarische und ökonomische - gefördert und verstärkt wurden.
