Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course investigates:

• material/aesthetic aspects of languages, speech, and song
• interactions/disjunctions between sound and sense
• linguistic "sound symbolism" and its place in cultural soundscapes
• the role of the senses in the cultural poetics of ritual
• the role of the listener/overhearer/spectator in social histories of the senses

Assessment and permitted materials

Evaluation is based on a brief term paper. Participants with particular ethnographic interests and/or experience are welcome to include analyses of their own data for comparative purposes.

Reading list

Readings will include historic and contemporary theoretical discussions along with ethnographic examples from Ireland and elsewhere.
