Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Most of the course will have seminar character. It will contain an introduction to past and present cultural configurations of Siberia, including indigenous and non-indigenous groups and life-ways. Sufficient time will be reserved for student presentations and discussions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Your grade will be based on the following:

Written seminar paper: 50%
Short oral presentations: 30%
Internet research: 10%
Participation: 10%

You need at least 60 points out of 100 in order to receive a passing grade.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

While western images of Siberia oscillate between a cold desert and a place of exile, human societies have developed a surprising array of cultural formations in the different ecological zones of Siberia. This course will put prime emphasis on students appropriating knowledge about Siberia through a critical reading of ethnographies. This will be achieved through a seminar format with some lecture elements. Russian language skills are not necessary but highly appreciated. Thus, the majority of readings will be in English and German.
