Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Since the first settlement of Oceania, the traditional techniques of seafaring and navigation have played a central role in explaining migration, settlement and cultural location. Major theories about the islanders are based on their special relationship to and with the sea. The sea formed the roads on which people moved, but it was also a place to be respectful of. In the course, students are familiarised with indigenous conceptions of space of the Pacific islanders and learn essentials about indigenous traditional seafaring and navigation. Individual aspects are specifically worked out by the students on the basis of guidelines, presented in plenary and discussed there. Based on the chosen topic, the students gain insight into other ways of thinking and acting.
Assessment and permitted materials
On the basis of a given example of a museum collection or certain objects of a collection, which is either given by the course instructor or chosen by the students themselves, their function, meaning, power and instrumentalisation are analysed. Each participant of the seminar has to interpret such a collection or object reflexively and to work on this 1.) in a short presentation in the seminar, as well as 2.) in the form of a written seminar paper. The overall grade results from a) active participation in the seminar, b) the short presentation and c) the seminar paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
