Marking is based on active participation including collective and peer-group discussion and short written work (30%), 10 minutes presentation (25%), and final paper (aprox. 20000 characters; 45%).

Examination topics
The assessment load is constituted by notions, concepts and approaches that were presented, examined and debated in the course as well as the discussed ethnographic case studies; all work done by the participants, whether collectively or independently.
Reading list
Recommended reading and audio-visual material will be established within the course.

Based on selected case studies forms and concepts of narration are critically analysed and compared from cross-cultural, post-colonial anthropological and trans-disciplinary perspectives. The socio-cultural particularities and characteristics of national film-making as they have become part of global popular culture through the format of the TV-series and online-platforms are examined and their relation to already established modes of narration in the oral and textual domains is debated. The issue of representation of what is thought as a common cultural trait and by whom it is created is also of key interest.
The seminar's goal is providing theoretical-methodological knowledge to enable participants to gain insight and competences for independant further work in diverse topic areas of visual anthropology and popular culture.
This is an inter-active course. Apart from introductory input and impulse lecturing the seminar is based on intense communication, open discussion, active contribution and group work of all participants, and makes use of multi-media materials and seminal texts.
The seminar is conducted in English and is planned as on-site teaching, as each class is also on the moodle-platform it can be changed to on-line teaching at short notice.
