Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course introduces the students to the role of visual dimension in socio-cultural-anthropological sciences. During the course, attention will be paid to the analysis of different ways of doing audio-visual ethnography and its implications with different fields of research. The course offers the students the opportunity to develop theoretical and practical knowledge of visual ethnography and to develop a diverse approach to fieldwork. A selection of a few movies will be presented during the lectures and discussed together. The literature will be discussed in class to develop critical thinking on a visual ethnographic product.
Students will focus on an assignment that they will present during the course in the form of a video, visual essay, sensory ethnography, art essay, or augmented reality. The form of the presentation of the assignment will be discussed with the teacher. The visual ethnographic documentation produced will be presented and discussed all together in a dynamic way.
At the end of the course, students will prepare a written report of 3,000-3,500 characters to discuss their assignment.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Compulsory participation in the course units for preparation and follow-up (max. 2 Fehleinheiten).
- Text Reading and active participation (inputs, debate).
- Watching and discussing the movies.
- The students will have an assignment to focus on and to present during the classes (the form of the presentation will be agreed with the teacher).
- Writing a final report of 3,000/3,500 words about their assignment (Further information will be given in the first session).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

45 points for final report
35 points assignment
20 points for active participation

Für den erfolgreichen Abschluss der Lehrveranstaltung sind mindestens 50 von 100 möglichen Punkten zu erreichen.
