Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course we will look at theoretical approaches, histories, and ethnographic works that are concerned with different facets of longing. It introduces students to an wealthy area of the anthropology of emotions and proposes a framework for approaching it. We will be looking at the following aspects:
Day I:
- different conditions of longing, and the spatiality and temporality of longing
- historical and aesthetic genealogies of culturally specific notions, communities, and moral discourses of longing
Day II:
- the ethnographic relevance of practices and discourses of longing in unpacking social change and resistance, for understanding life under the regime of political or economic ideologies, and for asking questions about the good life
- methodological and poetic approaches to address the subject anthropologically

The module will have a dialogical character and will include creative methods.
