Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Indonesian course aims to facilitate students who want to learn the Indonesian language. All classes will be taught online. It will focus on 4 types of language skills which are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening and reading are the receptive skills, whereas writing and speaking are the productive skills.

There are ten chapters that will be taught at the beginner’s level or BIPA (= Indonesian as a foreign language) 1 by using the book "Sahabatku Indonesia" A1. After having completed level BIPA 1, the students will be able to engage in very simple conversations. They will be able to introduce themselves and use basic greetings, talk about families and colleagues, describe their appearance and personalities, make food orders etc, talk about daily activities, and describe the locations of their homes and give simple directions.

There are ten chapters that will be taught at level BIPA 2 by using the book "Sahabatku Indonesia" A2. After having completed BIPA 2, the students will be able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (such as very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography), communicate simple and routine tasks and exchange information on familiar and routine matters, describe in simple terms aspects of their backgrounds, their immediate environment and matters of immediate concern.

There are ten chapters that will be taught at level BIPA 3 by using the book "Sahabatku Indonesia" B1. In this book, the topics are very similar to book A2, however the level of teaching will be adapted to B1 by integrating the grammar to be studied at level BIPA 3. After having completed BIPA 3, the students will be able to read simple reports on familiar topics and write simple emails on subjects in their field, understand the main features of clear and standardised inputs on familiar matters regularly encountered in work environments, at school etc. They will be able to deal with most situations likely to arise when travelling, produce simple connected texts on topics of familiar or personal interest, talk about their education and plans for the future, as well as about favourite music and music trends. The topics are selected and graded in accordance with the needs, levels, and students’ interests.

There are ten chapters that will be taught at level BIPA 4 by using the book "Sahabatku Indonesia" B2. In this book, the topics are very similar to book B1, however the level of teaching will be adapted to B2 by integrating the grammar to be studied at level BIPA 4. After having completed BIPA 4, the students will be able to understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including expert discussions in their field of specialization, interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without much strain for either party, produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain their viewpoints on topical issues by giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options, discuss gender issues as they relate to perceptions of rudeness and cultural norms, talk about personal lifestyle, discuss common political situations and the behaviour of politicians. The topics are selected and graded in accordance with the needs, levels, and students’ interests.

The teacher uses the Communicative Approach during the learning activity. . In class, typical activities of this approach are: games, problem-solving tasks, and role-play.

Motivation is a central element. From the beginning of the course, the teacher will raise students’ interest about Indonesian language and culture. The role of the teacher is that of a guide, a facilitator or an instructor. Reading and writing can start from the first day. Communicative competence is the goal, for example the ability to use the linguistic system effectively and appropriately.
