Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This block course which is scheduled at the beginning of the first semester introduces the students to the abstract way of thinking and the standard terminology of university mathematics. Moreover, basic concepts like elementary logic, methods of proof as well as sets of numbers and algebraic structures which are used in the beginners courses "Introduction to analysis" and "Introduction to linear algebra and geometry" are presented. Hence this course is intended to bridge the gap between highschool and university mathematics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written or oral exam after the end of the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal is to introduce newcomers to the basics of mathematical terminology, and to ensure a solid basis for further studies.

Examination topics

The material will be presented by the lecturer.

Reading list

Als schriftliche Grundlage der Vorlesung dient das von Hermann Schichl und Roland Steinbauer verfasste Skriptum. Es kann ab Anfang Oktober im Skriptenverkauf (Öffentlichkeitsbereich im 2. Stock, Mo. - Fr., 9:30 - 11:30, sowie Do 15:00 - 17:00) erstanden werden.
