Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this term we will get acquainted with deeper concepts of Linear Algebra (eigenvalues, normal forms, quadratic forms, special groups of matrices,...). This will increasingly set us into the position to deal with quite varied, interesting applications, such as heat conduction in solids and fluids or image compresse, to mention just two. Concepts such as orthogonality which everybody would believe to be totally unrelated to such issues will, in fact, crucial. -- Research in linear algebra, largely stalling for many decades, has in more recent time seen a dramatic resurgence due to increased applicability and the emergence of novel computers and computer architectures.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examinations for 1 1/2 years after the ending of the lectures

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Get insight into the global aspects of Linear Algebra (theory + applications) and more generally to the universality of mathematical concepts where one and the same concepts proves central and completely appropriate in seemingly wholly distinct contexts

Examination topics

...the good old frontal lecture enriched by glances into the auditory ("pray pose questions")

Reading list

Natürlich orientiert sich die Vorlesung zu einem namhaften Teil an meinem Buch. Dazu auch die Literatur, die im letzten Semester genannt worden ist, sehr empfehlenswert, zunehmend insbesondere das Buch von Lax.
