Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course engages students in developing and adapting mathematical word problems while integrating them into effective lesson plans. A key focus is on fostering certain aspects of critical thinking skills in mathematics education. Students will analyze existing word problems, design their own word problems, devlop teaching scenarios incorporating critical thinking, and reflect on teaching strategies that enhance critical thinking in classroom settings.

Assessment and permitted materials

Obligations for/during the Course
1. Fill a pre-course-questionnaire & Initial Problem-Solving Task (completed in class)
2. Find a word problem that in students' opinion fosters critical thinking, and present and discuss this word problem in class
3. Design their own word problem(s) or adapt existing ones, and present the results in class
4. Reflect and discus on a video-recorded lesson (provided by the lecturers) and hand in a short written reflection
5. Develop a lesson plan scenario (for approx. 15 minutes of teaching), and present/teach this scenario in a teaching simulation setting in class
6. Use the feedback received during/after the teaching simulation to revise the lesson plan
7. Fill a post-course-questionnaire (completed in class)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements for a positive assessment:
*) Select and present a word problem fostering critical thinking
*) Develop a new or adapt an existing word problem
*) Write a short reflection about a given video-recording of a lesson
*) Develop and teach (simulation) a 15-minute lesson plan
*) Revise the lesson plan
*) Regular active participation in discussions during class

To be uploaded to the Moodle course:
*) Newly developed or adapted word problem
*) Short (<1 page) reflection on video of lesson
*) Draft (first version of) lesson plan
*) Final (revised) lesson plan

Assessment criteria:
*) Selection/presentation of word problem fostering critical thinking: 5 %
*) Development of new or adaptation of existinging word problem: 10 %
*) Short reflection about video-recording of a lesson: 10 %
*) Development and teaching (simulation) of 15-minute lesson plan: 35 %
*) Revised version of lesson plan: 20 %
*) Regular active participation in discussions during class: 20 %

Examination topics

Preparation and presentation of word problems by students; upload of reflection about video-recorded lesson; upload of written versions of first draft and of revised lesson plan; discussion, reflection and feedback about word problems and teaching simulation
