Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class will give an introduction to the arithmetic theory of elliptic curves. We will read parts of the textbook "Rational Points on Elliptic Curves" by J. Tate and J.H. Silverman. For further information (in German) go to
http://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~baxa/ws0809se.html

Assessment and permitted materials

The grade is determined by the quality of the student's talk and his or her participation in the discussion of the other talks.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants will learn the basics of the theory of elliptic curves. They should then be able to study more advanced topics in this field and its applications.

Examination topics

The participants will present the material in individual talks. (Each participant will be assigned a section from the book by Tate and Silverman and will be given support when preparing the presentation.) A preliminary schedule of talks will be agreed on at an introductory meeting on October 2, 2008.

Reading list

Außer dem genannten Buch von Tate und Silverman sind z.B. die folgenden Bücher empfehlenswert:
J.W.S. Cassels, Lectures on Elliptic Curves
A.W. Knapp, Elliptic Curves
