Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Content: In this course we want to discuss about real applications (as opposed to pseudo-real contexts) of mathematics in everyday life and work situations. To that end, we shall on the one hand analyze existing word problems in text books with respect to their reality, on the other hand create and present word problems describing real applications.

Aims: Being able to analyze word problems with respect to given and self-developed criteria, being able to create and present real-life-application tasks to given topics.

Methods: group work, presentation, discussion

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment is based on the presentation, the uploaded self-developed word problems, and the regular active participation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements for a positive assessment:
*) Giving a 60-minute presentation of the analysis and the self-developed word problems in groups
*) Uploading the self-developed word problems in Moodle
*) Regular active participation

Assessment criteria:
*) analysis of existing word problems (30 %)
*) self-developed word problems (50 %)
*) regular participation in discussions (20 %)
