Aims, contents and method of the course

CD, MP3, WLAN, JPEG – how do they work?

In this course, we will recapitulate and deepen mathematical tools from the basic courses (Analysis, Linear algebra) with regard to concrete applications. Timely applications will be analysed in relation to their possible employment to teaching in high school, e.g. as part of project-oriented teaching units. The students are expected to learn the application of new methods by means of easily accessible examples.
* basis representations and the idea of compression, discrete cosine transforms (linear systems, diagonalisation)
* Generalization of bases for stable signal processing (frames, pseudoinverse, SVD)
* Fourier transforms, filtering and sampling
* Oscillations and differential equations
* Active handling of the material with the aid of software packages (MATLAB, Octave)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The students should acquire insight in mathematical basics of modern communication and find out, how the mathematical knowledge taught in the basic courses can be applied in this new context. They shall also become able to apply the new tools in simple form and to convey the central information (to their students).
